Maurice Murrell

Maurice DeRon Murrell was born on a stormy day on August 11, 1978 in Plainfield, New Jersey.  He was the only child born to his beautiful mother, Sheryl Murrell.  ”Mookie,” as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, passed away on May 24th, 2011, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey at the age of 32.

Maurice graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in 1996.  He then attended the College of New Jersey and graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing.  After graduating from college, Maurice followed his strong passion for working with young children and taught special education in the Irvington Public School System

Maurice always had an artistic soul and it was no surprise when he ventured into the arts to express his beautiful artistry.  The green-eyed actor was one of the stars in the two movies, “Finding Me” and “Finding Me: Truth.”  He was also cast in two additional movies.  Our astonishing model was featured in countless ads, spreads, calendars, books, magazines and music videos.  He modeled for Steven Vaschon, Justin Monroe, David Jackson, Ruff Skin and Brian Dragon Fashion Week.  Appearing in Clik, Seven, Flawless and Next Magazines were among his many modeling accomplishments.  Maurice was the cover model for the highest selling issue of Clik Magazine and was the 2005 Man of the Year.  This gorgeous model was also the face of the popular annual “Miami Sizzle”.

Maurice, an extremely talented writer, was a guest writer for many magazines as well as a published poet.

His passion for dancing was immeasurable, and he had the honor of dancing for the New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks.  He also enjoyed teaching the art of dance to others and instructed many over the years.  Among his many accomplishments, Maurice proudly received his black belt in Capoeira.

Maurice enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He loved traveling, drawing, baking, playing video games, watching movies and working out.

Many who knew Maurice would describe him as humble, funny, kind spirited, articulate, intelligent, sensitive, gorgeous and creative.  This young man influenced so many by being himself!

Maurice was predeceased by his loving Godmother, Lisa Easley, his paternal grandfather, Raymond Pitts and his Aunt “Boopie”, Janice Taylor.  He leaves: His mother, Sheryl Murrell: his maternal grandparents, Milton and Doris Murrell; His uncles, Kevin, David and Michael: his aunts, Geneva, Paulette, Sharon, Lisa and Andrea; and a host of adoring cousins, relatives and friends to celebrate his life.
